Hi everyone,
I'm working on a large-scale Terragen scene (planetary scale, camera transitions from orbital to near-ground level), and I'm running into some non-intuitive behavior regarding terrain detail and displacement fidelity.
Specifically, I'm trying to understand the interaction between:
- Heightfield resolution vs. voxel detail in the Terrain node
- Fractal detail added via additional Heightfield Generate / Power Fractal nodes
- Displacement quality at render time (especially when using high Render Subdivisions and Detail values)
In some cases, increasing the heightfield resolution and adding higher-frequency fractal detail actually seems to
reduce perceived terrain sharpness near the camera, while increasing render-time detail alone gives better results but at a much higher render cost.
My questions is How does Terragen internally prioritize or blend pre-baked heightfield resolution versus procedural fractal detail during render-time displacement?
I'm especially interested in any insights from those who've dealt with cinematic fly-throughs or planetary-scale scenes that transition to ground-level close-ups. Thanks in advance for any technical insights or best-practice recommendations.
