Pond Error.../

As I said before, I'd post this when it was done...

The small image is a 0.5 detail test, looked nice enough so, I resized the horses to a more correct scale and went for the full render...

The larger image is rendered at level 1 detail, there are some really nasty looking lines at each render region of the sky and the lighting on the rocks is making them look pretty flat.

I'll give this another go at some point, if anyone can share any insight to these strange effects, I'd appreciate it.

2 cloud layers, cloud detail 1.1, atmo 64 samples.

gi errors it looks like, seem them before around the forums not sure what the fix is though.
The world is round... so you have to use spherical projection.

Thanks, Will. I might give this a go with sunlights instead of GI then, I've never had any GI errors before, other than the 'red-dot syndrome' that is. This was looking quite nice until it came to rendering full overnight, I awoke to find these horrible lines in my sky and a pond bank seriously lacking the correct contrast.

Nope, no cropped sections, Tom, I just left it running overnight as a full render.
It does look like crop lines though, I've experienced these many times but I'm always able to correct that afterwards with a little overlap in each crop region.

I do however crop little test sections of all aspects of my scenes before I render them final, these anomalies didn't show up though until I came to render it full.
I'm very dissappointed with it as the sky, in theory should be really nice and the bankings had lovely shadowing from the stones. God knows I spent long enough on it, I don't think I have the patience for re-twiddling all the knobs again just yet.
Maybe I'll bring it back when/if we see TG2 released...

I mentioned in another thread that the reflections on the wet stones didn't translate very well on the other side of the bank... This is definately a GI thing, with GI enabled there is a silver sheen to the far away bank, like it's coated in specular plastic, this doesn't happen without GI and the stones have the correct reflection properties, i.e. dark, wet stones with brighter highlights, as opposed to light, plastic reflectivity with very pronounced highlights. Balancing all these issues is a task, especialy when I really need GI for the cloud layers, they're very flat looking otherwise.

I agree with anyone who said they see a good scene here.  Some nice work.  Maybe when the Beta is released, you could try again.
So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

I think the sky problem is a bug with the cloud acceleration cache. This has been fixed for the beta. Until then, the only way to fix that is to disable the acceleration cache.

Some of the other problems with the lighting may be because of the amount of cloud in the sky. This will reduce contrast as GI picks up a lot of light from the clouds and the cloud may also be diminishing the sunlight intensity. You can reduce the intensity of the GI on the landscape and water by reducing the "strengt h on surfaces" in the Enviro Light, and this may give you more contrast. If it does not, then maybe a different sun position is needed.

It looks like there is some high frequency, high amplitude displacement on the foreground rocks which only appears when you render at high resolution or detail. If the amplitude of that displacement is too high it could be doing strange things with the lighting and reducing the contrast you expected.

I am sorry I was concentrating the butterfly in the middleground and couldnt figure out what it was....so I guess my sub conscious did the job for me and reminded me of the vehile in UT3 called Manta.

The butterfly in the middle ground is actualy two horses. :D A little small to make out clearly but in the smaller test image I posted above, they were too big and had to be re-scaled to fit with the scene(I still think they're a little big but I'm limited to 800x600 renders so any smaller and they would seem like specks.

Thanks for the explanation on the cloud thing, Matt. And yes, the scales on the displacements on the rocks are pretty tight, there's only 1cm displacement but the fractal scales are 0.25, 1.5, 0.01. I need to rethink that too it seems.

Anyway, here's a temporary Photoshop job I've done by raiding the temporary files folder for cropped and lower resolution tests and combining them with this failed render from my first post. Far from what I'd have liked to have done by any means but it's all I've got at the moment, the .tgd is back on the workbench for a tweak/overhaul I think.

I'll post any more updates...
