I got the idea for this render from watching alot of Hayao Miyazaki's films.

Pine forest population using a image mask for a density shader-
lamp posts from mr lamppost

Great idea.  A couple of suggestions - one would be to have some sort of variety to the grass.  Theres a grass pack around here with three different sorts of grass that would look cool under that light.  Another suggestion would be to up the translucency of the pine needles.  Something looks a bit dark about them.

What did you do with the clouds / atmosphere?  It reminds a bit of a dark English night with a night of chill on its way.  Nice.
So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

sorry about the late reply..
I was going to add a second grass object in the next render in this series
but I was also considering adding a another tree population with another type of tree to go on one side of the path.
or just just changing trees.

-there are no clouds-
as for the atmosphere I just have atmosphere samples of like around 120,
and two light sources(lamp posts) that are set to glow in the atmosphere
(I was trying to light this scene just with lightsources)

You might find a better way to amp the lighting without going to 120 samples for the atmosphere.  48 should suffice and will cut down on render times.  Then, you could increase the Environmental settings for the atmosphere.  Experiment here, since it doesn't take much to amplify.

Hi,

You need a Totoro under that first lamppost :-).

Nice scene, the lighting in the atmosphere works very well it has real November feel.

I am surprised that you are not getting halos of blue dots around the light sources, I had endless problems with them when I originally used those lights.  TG has had several upgrades since then so they may have been one of the things that were fixed.  The branches on some of your trees look a little odd my guess would be the specular value in the branch material.

Doesn't work.  Because the lamps and columns are modelled at real world scale the light emitting surface is to small to be picked up by the global illumination calculations.  The entire lamp unit is only just over 60cm high including the post mounting spigot.  As there is more control over the GI in the latest version I am making tests but so am getting nowhere; this may be fixed in the future, look at Matt's comments in this thread.

Sorry I misread this.

Anyhow the tests for materials emitting light were not wasted; it still doesn't work for small objects.  I have also now made some quick tests with a light source at an appropriate position and strength for use with real world scale lighting columns and even with 128 atmosphere samples am seeing loads of noise close to the light source.

I guess I'll get to work on making a model of totoro.
after that I'll render it with TG2 once my current render Completes itself.
