It's been a while since I have posted artwork here, but last week I got a new computer and I wanted to see what it could do. The following scene I had actually made in July '08, but I have never actually seen it all rendered due to the fact that on my old laptop (Athlon 3700+, 2gb RAM), the most I had ever rendered it was only 1/4 the way through at 32 hours so far. My new comp (i7 960 [overclocked], 6gb RAM, plus more goodies) rendered this in 25 hours (1920 x 1080).

As you can see, lot's of trees (Ultra quality), all atmosphere quality values at 1 with "Enable ray traced shadows" turned on. Poking through the tree gaps are 15,000 ferns covering the ground. Here are the render settings:

Detail: 0.92
Anti-aliasing: 7
GI RD: 3
GI SQ: 3

I think I will go back through my past projects, do a little upgrading to them and render them all at 1920 x 1080...
Enjoy!

Excellent steamy rain forest atmospherics. Like it.

I hope I realise I don't exist before I apparently die.

Excellent fog. I can never get it to look this good.

This image was inspired by a view of the mountains next to my parents-in-law's apartment building near Daegu, Korea during the rainy summer season (I live in Korea too).

Good fog. I also like the quality of the plants' distributions.

Didn't know you lived in Korea. You'll laugh at me for this, but I enjoy watching some of their professional Starcraft gamers on TV :P.

So do I! In my opinion, it's more exciting than watching a traditional sports game :)

Ultra Quality for the trees implies you're either not using Raytraced Object rendering, or you're using an older version that doesn't have it available. I'd strongly suggest using it, and upgrading to the latest version if you haven't yet, because it'll save render time and improve quality at the same time.

Also for a scene like this where you really don't see the ground, I'd try Raytrace Everything, with AA set to maybe 4. Give it a shot, might render faster and at as good or better quality.

P.S. Really nice scene though. Welcome back. ;D

Wow, sounds like a sweet gig!

If you ever meet Kim Taek Yong in person, get his autograph for me :D.

Oshyan, I did enable Raytrace rendering for objects. Are you implying that the quality setting for objects is disregarded when Raytracing objects is enabled?

I will give Raytrace Everything a shot with AA of 4 and post the results though, I am interested in seeing how it will turn out! Oh and it's good to be back, my new comp has inspired me to do some more TG2 work now that I can output renders much faster.

Yes, that's correct, the population quality settings are ignored with Raytrace Objects.

What are your atmosphere/cloud sample settings? If they are particularly high, you might want to reduce them for Raytrace Everything as it handles noise much better.

Great work. This morning I just saw some kind of scene you could compare to this render. Well done!
