Ocean-like surface

How would I go about getting nice big, ocean waves? Surf is my dream, but I think that's a way down the skills track... When I just amp up the wave scale and roughness of the water shader of a lake, I'm not getting mountainous seas, more just a bumpy lake.

Second question. How do I get a plateau-ish effect? I mean like a flat surface with a very sharp, almost vertical drop-off edge?

Third question - just to push my luck - I'm trying to create long ridges, like maybe Sahara-style dunes, or the long, rippling sand ridges on a beach. But all I seem to be able to do procedurally so far by fiddling with power fractals is to get very close, bumpy ridges (by distorting noise in one direction). Any tips on how to get more space between ridges and make them smoother?

Answers to any of these questions much appreciated.

While I'm at it, the product of today's experiments. Nothing special skill-wise, but still quite evocative...

Hannes made a ocean animation some time ago. They looked like pretty big nice ocean waves, but it might have been an illusion. I don't know how he did it.
Heard of computer graphics? CG? Terragen 2, the landscape generating program, also known as TG, a whole cool way to create realistic CG - with TG.

1. Attach a power fractal to the water shader's input, and play with its size and fractal settings. Large size and large displacement will produce extra (large) waves. If you stretch the X or Z you will get elongated waves. Add more PF's if you want to refine.
2. Others know more about this.
3. Blend the ridges by another stretched (ridged) fractal with larger setting would be my start to experiment...

That's great dune, thanks. BTW, I bought your beach the other day, to try to work out how to do surf. Amazing, but too high powered for a mere noob such as me to understand the node network.  ???

No thanks, thanks to you. It's difficult, I know, and hard to get right. Here's another recent surf image: http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=10911.0
