I am not up on desert plants... But I would guess this is a flowering succulent, a cactus of some kind.

not Blender, Cinema4D is my weapon of choice. But I am always looking at Blender, because it does a lot for free.

Some more steps are done. basic texture for Schlangi is done, and the "pox" are in place

It will be perfect for desert landscapes. It does have a certain 'Wetbannana' look. I'll bet he makes an excellent alien render using this.
