Planetary Rings/Discs
April 05, 2007, 11:41:26 AM
I just noticed something aboutthe discs....in order to render disc....your camera has to be above the disc plane or else it wont show up in render....I dont know if anybody notice it or not but can anybody confirm that for me please?

Yes, I noticed this when making ringed planets, I don't think it can be viewed edge-on -- it's like the disc has no height, but you can see it when the disc is tilted.

yea the disks don't have depth I think.

The world is round... so you have to use spherical projection.

you guys didnt get my point......here is the example....
one render is from above the disc plane, hence you can see the disc
and the other one is same planet just lowered the camera BELOW the disc plane. Result: no disc

dhavalmistry,
I think I found a solution. I don't know why but if you change the axis which defaults to 1 on the"Y" axis to a -1 the disc is viewable from below.
Hope this helps

Nice workaround bro,
but it would be nice in the final version if they would add a width factor for the disk, and maybe be able to have it open as well in the center like Max allows you to do with a disk. Just a thought /smiles.

Or they could just add a cylinder object, with adjustable parameters.

or...you could add your own object which was a planet with rings

or maybe you could just add an asteroid belt with all the customizable parameters as the disc (and some extra parameters for asteroid object)
now that tops all your ideas

Geez... that image just shows how far Terragen has to come to be able to compete with all the other software out there.

yep, Terragen's really primitive, eh?
We should all move on to Paint. These Planetside developers need to learn a thing or two..from MS Paint of course
