Coastal railway

Dune

This started out as a test for a hillside road as the title suggests, but ended up as a coastal railway. Shit happens  ;) Perhaps I will make a wall on the left, as I am not very pleased with it yet, and the grasses are not good enough. Any other comments are welcome, of course. Perhaps some more mist/haze....

Jonathan

Hi Dune, as someone into railways, one comment would be that the curves may be a little tight - unless we are talking about a branch line which only has small engines running on it! The stones all seem to have got wet - including the higher stones (above track level) which would indicate the line line floods regularly :) The sort of vegetation next to a railway would be thistles, brambles and small trees (which the railway would eventually cut down). Love the idea of the scene and wonder how you managed to lay the track! Jonathan.

You're right about the track; it's supposed to be some small branch line (or I would have added another set of rails). The higher wetness I just added to give the moss on the large stones some glistening, as if they are wet from sea mist. But you're right, I might get that off. I'll see if I have some other veggies. The track is a series of repeated and mixed simple shapes and masks.

love these scenes...look forward to the next update/arrival!!

bring in to land more, make straighter and raise it some to be more real, then good picture.

Jonathan

When you say the track is made up of simple masks, you might as well talk rocket science! Martin has posted (in the support section under my topic re: render camera issues) that he is putting together a load of FAQs, videos and tutorials to help newbies like me - but needs someone good at website design.....just thought I'd mention it in case you knew anyone :). P.S You could do with a nice model of a GWR Pannier Tank to go with the goods van...which someone very carelessly left on the line ;)

Some more rocket science then: if you take an SSS, make it a line, and warp this by a redirect, PF and warp shader, you have a warped line. Double this, and add a similarly warped set of horizontal stripes (Y-repeated grayscale image map). That's the basics. Up to you to make it work together and refine.

@TheOne: Thanks, but if I take it more to land, you can't see all features well enough in a small render. This is more to make a lot of different features work together than it is meant to be real. You might see it as an old side track that is slowly giving way to higher tides, due to warming up of the planet...

I might add an old signpost, overgrown by ivy, but I have to make that yet.

Dune

Some other settings.

Ok, you are right. To make more real it not be same picture. Is good composition as is. Everyone seems to be focus on make real. I like. As for rocket science, is most simple science: explosion in container has one way out, in opposite direction is pushing forward. not hard to see :)

Jonathan

Hi Dune - love this last image (and the signal!). It looks more natural now, and I can see this looking like a lakeside railway. I will try the SSS stuff when I have finished my current project. Still needs a locomotive though ;)

The last one I like, Ulco. However if you are still taking suggestions, try reducing the saturation, particularly on the grasses.

Cheers;

You're right, Frank. I got a spanking from my wife for making it too green! Already changed it.

This one took about 5 hours, due to the tiny displacement of the mosses on the rocks. But I'm still not happy with the lighting. It's a bit difficult as you're looking towards the sun at 18 degrees high. I might do another one.

Luc

Already nice improvements compared to the first one.

You may have to use ambient occlusion for fill lighting. I have done many renders with low angle sunlight. When the sun is in the camera viewpoint, lighting a scene is very difficult.
