Ring Imaging

I've been looking at making planet rings lately and a thought occurred to me to do it a way simpler than the other methods I've seen.  In Celestia, an astronomical simulator, rings are made by using a long and narrow image repeatedly set side by side.  An example of such an image is attached. 

I tried using this on a disc, but none of the projections on the default shader made it look right.  Is there a way to make it look right, some sort of shape shader or something?  If so, I think everybody wanting to do rings could save a great deal of time.
