So I am planning on purchasing more ram for my macbook pro. I currently have 4gigs and plan to upgrade to at least 8. I have noticed that I can buy two 8gigs to put in there making it have 16gigs of ram. However, according to apple's site, it says that the max I can put in is 8. Would terragen 2 or any other high ram demanding program not use more than 8 gigs?

Yes they can use more than 8 gigs. I find compositing software especially RAM intensive. Some terragen scenes with intensive populations and whatnot  Ive seen 6-7 GB but I'm sure it can go beyond that.. Typical load for me seems to be around 6-7 gigs. I have 12 GB atm and I have run out on few occasions.. Anyway I dont know anything about apples so I wont comment on what their site says

that is helpful. So I researched into it more and I can install 16GB. However, I am noticing that a common error is dealing with overheating. Has that been a problem with anyone else? I have a macbook pro late 2011 version.

Hi
You will find help here: http://guides.macrumors.com/Buying_RAM
These next two are my personal choice, the customer service is great and they are well qualified to help you make the right decision on what and how much ram you can go with.

I use a mac pro tower though.
It has been eaten.

I've got a 2011 quad core MacBook Pro with 16GB of Ram. And while they can get hot during rendering, they won't overheat. Go for the 16GB I say. It will make a huge difference.
