Global SRTM30 data? I doubt there is anything else for free.

Coincidentally I'm working on Vesuvius now, but not using DEM or TG2 ;). Had a look for some DEM a few weeks ago. It's not that easy to get hold of and isn't particularly high quality at all. In the end we chose not to use Terragen for this project so I've created it by tracking a heli-shot of Vesuvius and then creating geometry over the nulls PFTrack spits out.
I'd be interested to hear of any DEM you do find mind. :D

Try these guys:

Global Land Cover Facility

They have the STRM global data but it's only 30 sec arc (90m) resolution

Try here:  http://tinitaly.pi.ingv.it/ - Looks to be 10m data but slightly complicated to access (need to apply for an account to download the data, for research only, use of the data must be referenced with some citations) But if you can get past that the data should be far superior to the SRTM.

thanks Ryan!
I did manage to get some files from  http://tinitaly.pi.ingv.it/
but they are asc format...not sure how to convert them into something terragen can use

Glad you got found some data Michael.  I'm a little out of date with some of the newer GIS Stuff but I'm certain that GlobalMapper would be able to do the conversion.  Unfortunately it is not free, however there may be some opensource options that may work.  Take a look at GDAL - Geospatial Data Abstraction Library and possibly GRASS GIS.

If the file isn't multiple GB's huge, you can send it to me and I can try and get it converted for you.
