I want to create a river in a canyon, but I can't think of a way to do this... =\
Any help?

3DGuy

Just go to the water tab, click on 'add water object' and then lake. You only need to set the correct height. You can do this beforehand by moving your mouse in the 3D preview along the wall of your canyon upto where you want the water to be, make a note of the 'Y' value below the 3D preview and then input that in the 'water level' input box of the lake object.

Heh, that's not what I meant, should've been more specific.
I know how to add water, what I don't know is how to create the canyon itself, with two cliffs forming the river.

Easiest way is to use a DEM as a base and then, if you want strata or overhangs, use a Strata and Outcrops shader or some displacement. That's what most of the canyon images the testers have created have been doing.

hmm.. Where do I get those DEMs?

Is one place - that's where I get my US DEMs from.  I'm currently rendering a view of the Grand Canyon :)

you'll need something like 3Dem to convert the DEM to Terragen format - I have 4 of them for the view I'm using and they are about 2Mb each.

You can get 3Dem from http://www.visualizationsoftware.com/3dem.html
in case you are wondering - the DEMS I used are

1663002.DEM.SDTS.TAR.GZ
1663003.DEM.SDTS.TAR.GZ
1663546.DEM.SDTS.TAR.GZ
1663547.DEM.SDTS.TAR.GZ

I'd post the whole .ter file but it's 8Mb so I'd get shot :)

I'd suggest http://seamless.usgs.gov/ or http://www.mapmart.com/ (allows direct output to .ter, but only 10 tiles downloadable at one time for free).

You could also use a heightfield editor like Wilbur or Leveller or Geocontrol to get the basic canyon shape then take it into TG2, add displacement to the canyon walls, and add your water.

The Seamless front end is evil though :(

Oshyan

It's evil if you use IE. Through Firefox it seems to work great. :D

I always use Firefox!! :)

Here's a render I did of the Grand Canyon from DEM data in case Halflife wants to see what you can do.  It's not the best image ever - I should have sloped the strata a bit I think and the river doesn't look too good but hey - it's a start

Hi! Try to import another terrain xD Make terrain in Terragen 0.9 , or more usefull terrain generator )) I like use World Machine, can help you.

halflife

FrankThomas, how did you make the shader for the rock? Mine looks a bit flat...

FrankThomas

it's a surface layer then a strata and outcrops shader with the defaults left as they were

halflife

Thank you!
Here's the final result:
