This is very much a WIP...................don't laugh.  :P

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Maybe just the right depth of field might be set up to give the impression of motion.

Being born in '36, I can appreciate this. Nice work. About he props, I remember Hannes doing something to improve his on the helicopters.

Epic scene Richard, cool start!

I don't know about the strong plane shadows in the water as the sun (hidden by clouds or not) seems to come from the lower right background.
You could also think about a more cinematic frame ratio like 2:38 or 2:39 for your great scene before you get your self buried in details at this frame ratio.

Looking at some reference pictures from the WWII pacific war, I'm asking myself if it's easy to simulate anti air flak fire
(elder, exploded ones, not your cool exploding ones) just with very small, tweaked and dark low-level 3D Cumulus "sheep" clouds..

I'm imagine additional smoke over the ships chimney, 2-3 little muzzle flashes, some tracer ammo and motion blur (all by postwork maybe),
the movie "Pearl Habor" could go home then!  :D

Let it roll..

Nothing to laugh about, Richard. Deadly serious, and also your render. It's a great start already, with Alex' ideas, it could be a winner. maybe turn it into b&W and smudge it up in the end, make it 'real'.

yossam

Low res render using Dunes' .tgd..................thank you sir.  :)

Now, gotta do something about the props................ :-\

Dune

Well, my tgd doesn't come out very well, I'm sorry to say. I think you should restrict the explosions to the area between ship and planes (I also forgot to add a soft edge to the simple shape) and perhaps reduce the size of the 'balls' (they're 20m now, I believe). And you probably need higher AA and/or quality settings in the cloud, as they're very grainy. You should also play with the warping amount if reducing size of puffs, or they'll be torn out too much.

yossam

A little better..............I think.  :-\

This was .5 and AA 3.

Dune

Well, AA3 isn't very much. And did you place the simple shape between ship and planes? These puffs look really close to the camera. If you post the tgd, I can have a look....

yossam

The cloud layer is roughly 10M in front of the planes, and about 90M from the battleship. This was just a test render...........I'm doing some minor changes before I render in hi-res.

Bjur

Go on Richard, the potentials of that scene are huge!
