Wow, it looks so familiar :)
Actually it was Dutch engineers who came over to my part of Somerset many many years ago who built the network of ditches that drained the Somerset levels. The ditches are locally called "rhynes", a memory from when they were first built.

My Dad's house in Kingston Seymour has a rhyne at the top of the front garden... Part of an ingenious network that make the levels habitable! :))
