Hi all,
Thanks to the suggestion of Richard (which I had already thought of, of course  ;D ) I resized the terrain, tweaked the enviro lighting and the sun, faffed with the sand and gravel sizes and added a bit of displacement to the more upright faces. This is a lot more of the look I was going for.
Comments please  :)

Looks pretty good already. Seem to me u are ready to put some life on the picture :)
And I guess you will tweak the contrast/tone after you done with the render in PS or something as that is the only thing I miss.
Otherwise looks like a photo to me ;)

Looking better. I'd be tempted to try a different sun position.

Hey there Mr!
this looks great; I'd go with Bob's suggestion, maybe drop the sun a few degrees, and swing it round to the 3 O clock ish position a bit more?
great colours and terrain/details here too!

OK, re-did this last night. Took choronr and Jasons advice and moved the sun round and dropped it a bit, also lessened the strength of it too. Added the birds and some high level cloud.

Guys, you were spot on. This looks better in my opinion, but then, what do I know  ;D

OMG I need to calibrate my monitors. This looks great on one of them, but on the other it's a bit dark in the shadows.... Not sure which one you guys will get. Depends on your monitors I suppose  :)

Looks good on my monitor. I would add some color variation in the surface shaders.............too much the same color IMO.

Big improvement. The lower sun help a lot. Agree with Yossum, some color variation should enhance the the scene.
