hi there,

I wonder, if it is possible to render a really cartoon-ish looking sky (or a complete scene with surface) with TG2 or TG3?

The only match I´ve found on this forum is: http://www.planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,7861.msg84005.html#msg84005 - but
there is no tgd attached and no explaination of the settings, either...

So, if you know, how to archive a good looking "toon-render" - please let me know!

Cheers!

It is not much about the sky i tested. It was more for the fun.

The 7z file does have one of the free plants from here and one free toy plane i forgot from where i found.
Our mathematical skilled artists here could make wonders.
Using different angles for shading, lighting it could be possible to get black edges etc. maybe.

Martin(Dandelo) had many files to download actually.
He or others will help you soon i think .

Thank you very much!

Some more suggestions on how to render the sky "toon-ish"?

I haven seen much regarding cartoon rendering here around.
But that doesn't mean you can not do this.
The very basic way might be to use a background image for example .
There are many different cartoon looks.
If you post an example others could see what you are after maybe.

Personally, I like the idea.  Unfortunately, I (and probably several others) just haven't had a chance to experiment in this area.  Don't mistake a lack of responses for lack of interest.  Although, I'm convinced you can adapt Terragen to suit this particular style, I just don't know what settings would effect the look you're after.  I think, mostly, you'd want to strip a lot of shading from your clouds.  There are also ways to get fluffier clouds, as well.  You just have to tweak the settings until you get the look you want.

Personally I thing the way forward with this is to make it look like a cartoon in post.

I have a little accidental experience with this topic. What (I think) you want to do is like Kadri demonstrated. That is, make things with flat single colors. Use objects that were built to have a cartoon feel/design. Have no volume in the Atmo.. No volumetric lighting.
No shadows! Use hand drawn billboards for the background.

And then after you render out the scene/frames. Use Photoshop plugins on each frame to add the particular cartoon style you want (batch process the frames several times to build like you do with layers)

But really. Terragen really does not do "old style" cartoons well at all (I would say). Modern extremely high production value 3D cartoons, YES!
But old school 2d look, no. It would just be so much work, working against the thinking that TG was built on...IMO.

What you want is something like https://www.toonboom.com/products/harmony-stand-alone
*I guess*

Hope that helps a little. Or at least gives you some more ideas.

A few years ago I messed about with cartoony TG renders. Not great but fun to try for something different. I'm sure I could do better these days, these are pretty old now.
Search for 'Meep Meep' and 'Area 52'.

With all the density controls on clouds you can control the density or depth with any image, black and white or color.  The image can be projected through a camera or y projection to do kind of a cookie cutter job on the cloud.
Here's some examples of what I mean.

As you see you have many possibilities.

I changed only few parameters and got these ones for example.

@DandelO and Kadri.
OK, I was wrong  ;D

But now I want to see a TG animation of a "Cartoon". And I will be nagging you all until I do.

Like!

Did it render fast? I would just guess that it did. If so, there should be more of this. Quite fun actually.

Nice job Kadri. THose clouds are rather good.
