What software do people use to compile the individual frames? Is there a preferred one? Are there free ones? Thanks.

Virtualdub and Blender comes just to my mind.
I haven't used Blender.
I have Sony Vegas but i still use Virtualdub for some basic things.
It is a great little software especially with that many nice plugins for it .
