What's in an .mtl file?

Does anyone know what sort of information is stored in an .mtl.  I know it's the general info for uv's, textures, etc.  I'm just curious as to why Terragen can load the diffuse colour image, but not the normal map or specular map. Are these not in the .mtl file?

On a somewhat related note, is there a reason why there is a significant lag when nudging the sliders in the object texture window?  It is quite frustrating waiting for it when you have multiple textures and you have to slide it for each map.  Perhaps this could be reprogrammed to only do it once after the maps and sliders have been input?

Just answered one of my own questions.  Looks like the lag after nudging a slider is related to displacement, as it goes away if ray trace objects is on.  Still wondering about the others, though.

You can read it in a text editor. And I just added a feature request for better loading of info.

I'll check it out.  It was great to see when they added diffuse color association.  I think Jo said at the time that it has something to do with the way a lot of program export texture files.  I'd like to see specular and displacement maps added as well.  In the mean time, I'm learning to save everything in .tgo format so I only have to do it once.

It's also application/software dependent at least for some features.
Wings 3D for example can export some specular settings most other
apps don't.You can also export hard edges(creasined edges) to TG.
If you export to other apps than TG it can be different, cause some
apps not only don't export settings, but they don't read them either.
There are always some problems, best to consider them part of the
process, from my point of view at least.
