This is the second render I've gotten back in HQ. Annd... well, very disappointed with it because my populations went haywire, mainly with the conifers which just completely took over I had previewed and had a clearing in the foreground but I accidentally unhooked my distribution node on the firs. :( I have a new version to render but haven't sent it off cause this one took a lot longer then I had expected.

I like it, even if you still do not.  Except for your highlights, which are blown out.

I like it too!
I would put some color variations on the trees and handle the highlights as mentioned before. This picture could be a killer.

I've been trying to figure out how to vary the color without it being on every tree. Is there a way to overlay like a PF over the whole population? Where the PFs color variances overlay on all the objects, not just one at a time creating variance on each object?

Also, by highlights are you referring to the high contrast from Lightroom?

Its got some nice things happening. When you fix up the distributions it will be better.

I like the two peaks too.

I'm not sure if the idea is stupid or not, but if I need color variations of the same tree-population I reduce the object spacing to half, third part or smaller, I copy the population and then I play around with the diffuse color. Best results I get with also different scaling width and spacing variations.

Also you can change the connected object of the copied population if you find another similar but different looking tree in your library.

So I do it after all... I hope hereby I don't give you bad instructions  :)

You can just use the Color Variation input for the Population on the Colour tab (new in TG 3). It takes a procedural function as input (e.g. Power Fractal, but you could also use an Image Map, or something else). You'll want to Tint Diffuse Colour, and you'll also probably want to increase the Diffuse Colour Multiplier unless you use bright colors because the color variation input Multiplies the object's texture color by the values in the input function, which generally results in a darker final output color. So you can offset this with Diffuse Color Multiplier values above 1. More info here:

Oshyan already answered about the color variations. I wanted to tell u the same thing. And yes I was thinking to handle the high contrast...that can be post work also...I was also thinking to get some color variations on the mountain too...hmmm....

Yeah that's a good idea, archonforest. I have three layers of coloring but I don't think they differ enough. And thanks Oshyan. I believe I did the offset in the tag preivew below my posts. It did in fact result in darker, and grayed out colors. I'll definitely have to take your suggest into account.

I don't know... I like tree populations whether they are uniform or not. The forest here looks monumental and that's good.

Also, a nice idea to "plant" two rugged mountains into otherwise relatively smooth hills.

Thank you, and yeah I was having fun with the SSS as part of a learning experiment. :D Giving myself assignments.

The lastest I got back... My friend was not aware the forest was suppose to be a forest so he did not tell me about this booboo...

But I think I got some better rock texture down. Could use some more base altitude coloring  I think, on the stone?

I also think he lied when he said it's at 0.95 quality... <.< Unless I broke more then I am aware of besides my main masks.

Also, ugly grass is ugly, and altitude constraints are off. Ugh. I want a better computer to be able to see previews quicker xD and also my own copy of TG.

Wait a sec... So these mountains are made from SSS? :o

You could also try to add distance shader if you like, to push some clouds back towards horizon.
