Visual distortion due to hot gases

Is there any method in TG one can use to produce the kind of visual distortion one sees when looking through gases of much different temperature including the eddies and currents in the gases such as seen in this photo? This effect will have to be animated. If it is not feasible to try in TG then I will probably look to Hitfilm or even Fusion. I am pretty sure you can fudge it in Hitfilm. I remember talk of adding a particle generator to TG but I don't think it has been done yet.

J'avais trouvé dans terragen 2, mais, je me rappel plus comment-on fait. ;)

Yes.
DandelO did something with this. But I promise you that you don't want to do this in TG. IF you animate it, you are stuck with it. Plus, however DandelO did it, he did it for a still. I dont think that he had it in mind for people to do it in a animation. You'll have to look for his threads.

Do it in post, here is a way forward for you, https://www.videocopilot.net/products/heatdistortion/
It has been eaten.

Probably best to do this in post for control and flexibility.

The only theoretical way I can think of is use a glass shader on a plane to look through and distort it locally with small but soft fractal.
