Is it possible to easily obtain multiple colors in a illuminated surface? I notice we only get the one light source color in luminosity.

There's luminosity image and luminosity function in the default shader where you can add variation.

Oh right, the Default Shader. Always forget about it's beauty. I used it for some nice semi-transparent looking sand awhile back.
