I got a day off today and I played around with Terragen again... This is the result. It's far from finished, but I post in anyway because I can learn so much from your feedback.  :)

Well, the light in your render is superb. What I would do is make more variation in grassy areas; different tones of greens and ochres/greys, and perhaps also mix in some more species of trees and shrubs to get more of an ecosystem. More/denser woods in the valleys perhaps, thinning out in places.
And the foreground is too simplistic; if you could add some large and smaller fake stones there, it would look like you're standing on a rocky promontery (if that's the word). You can localize the fake rocks with a simple shape.
It's worth working on your doodle anyway.

I added some fake stones in the foreground, changed grass colours and populations and added a little lake in the background.

Agree with dune. Changes y made are great. However more species of veggies are very much needed as dune said before. If you can plant some more stuff,  this pix will be a killer. Btw mood and lights are fantastic.

I agree with both. Especially some more tree species are needed.

But great light!

Rumburak

I added a few more tree species. I showed it to some of my friends and they thought it would be a picture that I took at my last hiking trip - so I guess it's quite good now.  ;) What do you think?

Dune

You're nearly there. I'd say. I can imagine they think it's a photo. The foreground rocks are a bit too spiky/rough, IMO. You could try to get some quite smooth rocks there and add finer displacements after you've got that covered. You probably need the smoothing effect in the rock surface layer to get rid of any previous small displacements, but that depends on your setup.

Yes, it reminds me quite strongly of a roadside vista I stopped to photograph driving through the Rocky Mountains in Colorado a couple of years ago.

And there weren't many trees there either! :)

Looks very nice - really like the sense of depth and the light.

Now the rocks in the foreground are smoother. Thanks for all of your hints and tips.

Great update, and you're very welcome.

That's really nice. Big improvment.
