Here I created an object that uses reaction diffusion simulation as a basis for generating the shape... I then created some volume using wings3d and imported as an obj. Rocks are a rebuilt version of Seth's along with several extra layers of fake stones of my own.... Atmo is also my own...
Some texture tweaks still needed... (No image maps, all procedural).

Terrific structure, looks like something dug out of the ground; lightning tubes, or so.

thanks guys!
next one on it's way, added some DOF too...
added some extra detail shaders to the object surface, which have eliminated the weird artefacts... kind of liked them too though!
I'll add more info at my blog soon...
