Any other than generic clouds take eternity to render.

Hello, i started another thread for different problem. Apologies if this is not allowed.
So i have been doodling with TG4 now and i am super impressed with RTP.

But my problem lies in the clouds, generic clouds are acceptable render time wise but any other.. oh boy.
I have a small 251x141 "test render" view going on with 0.25 details, and even there it takes way too long to render clouds. Talk about 10-20 minutes (haven't bothered waiting it out cause it doesn't serve my purpose).

My cpu is rather dated, i wonder if it's about that. But i really doubt it cause i was able to do complicated renders in way less time than these cloud render ones.
specs:
i5-2500k
Nvidia gtx 1070
z68 pro3 gen3
Multiple ssd's
16gb ddr3 1800 mhz

I have tested the clouds with multiple different scenes and the render times are always absurd.

Sorry if my explanation sucks, i just want to know if this is normal.   :o

edit: added specs.

Can you provide 1 or more TGDs? The new "v3" clouds in Terragen 4 do render slower, but at much greater realism of course. But it's very possible your settings are just not optimal, or you're using a really complicated shader network for the cloud density or something. We won't know without seeing how you've set things up.

I could provide TDG's,  but it's not worth it. I created a new project and added easy clouds and as it just increases the scenes render time from 0:00:07 to  0:03:36. I wish it wouldn't take that long, since my workflow requires a lot of small renders. I suppose i gotta find a way around it. Thanks again for your time :)

Dune

The 'normal' V3 clouds are much faster, but then you need to work on nodes yourself for special effects, if it's even possible to get the 'easy types'. But I admit, I'd rather use the normal V3 clouds for faster renders myself.

AP

I am considering the v3 clouds as well but it is difficult to have those specific patterns that the easy clouds produce so well.

Excuse me, but if you don't care why do you open a topic at all?
I don't mean it in a harsh way. But if you post an example maybe we or Planetside finds a wrong,
excessive value or whatever you used and maybe others could see better how to use or not to use those clouds.
And maybe there might be a bug somewhere (TG4 does have many new things so it is an option) and we all could benefit from your posting.

Apologies, i now see how my post can be seen as negative or ignorant. I just figured that i wouldn't waste anyone's time here since i already figured out it was meant to be like that.

But if anyone is interested of seeing / comparing, i have included a project file with easy clouds on it.
With clouds the render takes 0:01:23, without clouds it takes 0:00:05. (with the rendering settings i often use, that are also in that project file).

I completely understand that these are a shortcut in a way and thus not optimized for speed. One should tweak their own clouds if the render speed is an annoyance (i will use generic clouds from now on and tweak from there).

Once again, apologies and thanks for the help y'all :) !

Really there is no need for an apologie.
Communicating over the internet is difficult.
I meant just post and see what happens :)

On the topic of clouds.

1. Why can't i localise my clouds anymore ? That option is grayed out.

2. Is it intended that one cant copy coordinates properly during RTP ?
I seem to copy some astronomical coordinates during rtp if i right click from the ground.

...

I think it isn't disabled. It is grayed out because it needs to be enabled to be working as intended.

"Cloud Layer V3 and Easy Cloud require "Localise" to be enabled and prevent you from disabling it. The default radius is 50km. "

Have a look at the "Cloud" section.

And getting coordinates with RTP on doesn't work indeed, you'd have to do that without RTP.

For me it looks like grayed out in every different cloud type.

Or am i understanding something wrong ?

Double click the cloud node to see better which version it is.
If the node is docked at the left side you can't see the version of the cloud at the top of the node window.
