Simon Stålenhag is an artist whose work I really admire. In the seventies there were hardly any concept artists, and those who did that work came from very different occupational groups. For the first Alien movie, Ridley Scott could count on the talent of Moebius (comic book artist), H.R. Giger (painter), Chris Foss (illustrator) and Ron Cobb – who is actually a production designer, among others.
Nowadays, thousands of people earn their bread as a designer for the film and games industry, and they are all very good, the only downside is that their work all seems to be alike. Giger and Moebius still echo around in contemporary designs.
Simon Stålenhag has a slightly different approach to his paintings in that he combines everyday situations with strange and disturbing elements. In addition, I like his painting technique and the way he uses textures.

Wow! Incredible work!
I agree that a lot of people have the same styles. That can make a lot of films feel really samey. You see the same thing in photography though. There are some competitions I've given up entering now because the winners are always producing the same things again and again...

Great. He has a very distinct style indeed. Looks like opaque watercolor.

I thought it was gouache, but it turns out he works almost exclusively digital. Impossible to determine nowadays.

Ah. I used to paint in gouache as well, but it's much easier digitally I found. Easier to correct mistakes, work in layers and get the colors correct (wet gouache is different from dry gouache). Still extremely nice work what this guy makes!
