Gaea image map as base. I've taken Hetzen's Square noise and used it to drive the y input of a redirect shader - only problem is the stretching! Any suggestions about how to reduce that would be gratefully received. Shading is temporary and experimental.

That's really cool. I wonder if a soft maximum would help keep it from pushing up so hard while retaining shape.
