Saturn from Ad Astra.

Since it is on the internet now I guess I can post this.

Rendered entirely in Terragen.

The texture is multi-layered hand painted spherical projection cloud masks.
The rings are a very high res model.

Ah, fantastic! Gotta go see this before it leaves theaters.

Beautiful! You have to see it on the big screen to be able to enjoy it to the fullest.

Congratulations once again Richard :)

I did see it in theater 2 weeks ago and had suspicions on TG usage here and there, but never was exactly sure when/where, which I think attests to the quality of the job you did!

Cheers!

Could you explain that a little more? Are these really small particles?

The rings are simply a model based on this image.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rings_of_Saturn#/media/File:Saturn's_rings_dark_side_mosaic.jpg

I initially made a long line of two point polys mapping out where the rings were and the gapes between them. I then UV mapped that line of polys so that when I "lathed" (spin extruded it about the y axis) the line of polys into a ring the uv mapping would stretch the texture also into a ring.
It was rendered as a separate pass and then comped over the Saturn image.

This is really well done. It has a nice angle in (this) shot. Rings look really well done to. Though I have to give some C&C. The surface clouds are too dark, and the banding is too tight together (Saturn has prominent large bands unlike Jupiter).

Thanks a lot, Richard! What about the ring shadow? Is it comped in later as well?

Beautiful! Thanks for giving us a little background on your technique.

I must admit I had to search for Ad Astra, haha.
It looks great. And like bobbystahr wrote..."thanks for the how I did this".
