Torus Plane Texturing

I was hoping to apply a cylinder, or spherical projection image onto a torus plane, but i can't seem to get it to work. What would be the correct way of doing this? Or is it not possible with a torus type of plane object?

Edit: Though I am still curious I found a native terragen work around with glass shader and a card. I tried it before but thought it wasn't working right but must have messed something up.
