Distort by Normal with Function Noises

I was curious if it's possible to rebuild the function that creates the Distort by Normal effect for function noises? I'm finding it's actually very useful for PF based noises to derive displacement from, and would like something similar for function noises. In the past I would just warp by terrain scalars but it doesn't provide the same effect.

PS I tried warping by Get Normal in Geometry/Texture and multiplying the effect but it seems to act just like using the terrain scalar as displacement to warp.
