another play with nodes today. I was looking at images of the Darvaza Gas Crater, near Turkmenistan (I was looking for info on a film called Doorway to Hell and that came up) Been trying to create a lava like shader (not the easiest, for the way I wanted to look) I made a crater shader then masked the area with a simple shape shader into a surface shader. for the swirl pattern I used the cloud fractal as a mask. to increase the illumination (it just wasn't working for me I added a spot light into the crater)
This is my first pass, had to do a bit in photoshop to emphasise the glow

Pretty eerie. Cool render. Also always thought that gas crater was fascinating growing up. Have gou tried making the surface area glow with the luminosity in the surface layer / default shader?

Thanks
Yeah I tried it, didn't really give the bright glow I wanted. May have another play with my node set up.
