The only problem with this kind of work is that you need to set the sun the way the shadows fall on satelite imagery.

Yeah it's unfortunate the shadows are so hard. I've spent hours lightening shadows and clone tooling them out just for it to be "OK" and not really worth a large render.

Agreed guys.
Perhaps, as more maps become available from different sources, we'll be able to blend between them to mitigate shadows somewhat.
Otherwise, if you really need the map, it's time to find a good podcast/audiobook and cc/paint away.  ;)
