Thought I'd try a simplified aerial view kind of like Dunes but nowhere near as grand.

I took a image from Google earth around Stokesay Court in the UK and went from there.
The image needs some cleaning up as you can see but overall I think it worked.

I can't imagine drawing all the image maps in PS manually but I do think this will need some cleaning up. Thanks for having a look!

The more I use Terragen, the more I realize the world is not so small.

Dune

With a good aerial photo you can get quite far, but the problem with photo's is often that you have shadows of trees. So either you have to paint/clone them out or use the same sun setting. And the watermark 8)

Hannes

Good start! Maybe a little over saturated.

Agreed Hannes, I have issues with TG colors I pick either too dark or too bright over over saturated. I have to find the balance with each scene.. good call.

Dune the workflow I used might be a bit unorthodox but leaves room to easily go back and tighten up messes. I used the pro version of Google earth desktop which lets you save very large images of the terrain.
• Content aware in PS to remove the watermark and compass
• Auto traced in Illy with a limited color pallet, and just selected mass objects by their color and changed to R,G or B. Shadows were changed to black

I did have to scribble in some of the tree masks but all and all I think it just needs some masks cleaned and like Hannes said less saturated.
Regardless of the mask cleaning and less saturation, it's never going to shine like your post with the trains and tunnels. That was some really good work.

Dune

Oh, yes, that one. But that was a hell of a job to get together, some weeks I guess.

Î've made some true color grass charts for TG.
Maybe this is usefull (at least helpfull) for you Jay?

To get quite realistic color charts, I often used to use some satellite pictures.
I pick the reference areas with an average of 51x51px to get the exact color.

Search for  Satellite +true color +Landsat +MODIS
Both satellites will give you excellent areal pictures

This is how I do it

Thanks stormlord! That's a great idea. Also do you find (I might be crazy) working with color in TG is tricky? I can color pick a color from an image and in TG it just doesn't look the same.
