Crypt

Two versions of a crypt I was asked to make. Needed immediately and for a very modest payment, so it's a less than desirable quality, but well, it's 'only' to educate kids. I wanted just the light shaft and no 'dark mist' in the cellar, so I masked the cloud by a beam roughly the size of the window as well. Sun through glassless window, and a spotlight on the right, which makes the light that comes through the door into the crypt.
The coffin has an image map on top, from which I tried to make a displacement map, but it was lit one-sided, so that's pretty hard. Nevertheless quite reasonable.
The walls of the crypt itself didn't have rounded angles, and I couldn't get them rounded after I made the whole thing. Next time I have to do that right away.

That looks great!!! Although it looks kind of medieval, it has a subtle Indiana Jones feeling. ;)

Dune

Thanks Hannes! So the kids will like it then :)  It's a small exciting story that goes with an exhibition (opening tonight in Leeuwarden): https://www.friesmuseum.nl/en/see-and-do/exhibitions/freedom-feuds-purgatory

Well, this project is finished, but not before I wanted some spiderwebs in the crypt cellar. How to make those? Very simple, as it turned out, by just flattening a sphere, copying just the edges and extruding those a tiny bit, then warp the whole structure and add some extra attachment lines. Not perfect, but it's pretty nice. Here used as a pop. Unfortunately better webs should be custom made.

Great idea!!! Looks fantastic!

Great Idea Ulco!

Brilliant!
If by better webs you mean spirals (it does not show in the render that they are not) you could triangulate/subdivide the sphere and then choose the right subset of edges. Still some work, though.
We have just moved from Bonn to Geldern, its still 2.5 hours to Leeuwarden but maybe we can make it a long weekend, looks good.
Cheers!

Love the crypt and the spider webs was some great "thinking outside the box"
Nice to see your wonderful medieval scene "Tota Frisia" from your provided link. I really like how the moat water turned out on this image and the algae was a superb touch to finish it off!

Congrats on your hard work Dune.
The more I use Terragen, the more I realize the world is not so small.

Dune

Thanks guys. By better webs I actually mean two things; you have these dusty worn or semi-coagulated web (remains) that gather progressivley in quiet corners. I guess they can better be made by transparent textures on polys set in those corners. And secondly I mean the attachment of the web to the substrate, that must be custom made.

If you like beautifully lit medieval weapons, stone artefacts, coins, and that sort of stuff, the museum is well worth a visit (and they have other exhibits too). And Leeuwarden is a nice and friendly city. They've also made a life-size medieval catapult, which is really impressive. My work is in the book (spread) and on a stereodisplay.

Ah, I see.
The zoo-nerd in me has to comment that these are not only degraded remnants of spiral wheel nets, but also made by different species that do not weave spiral wheels to begin with (including the funnel webs from your last pic).
I could well imagine applying your ingenious edge-technique to meshes sculpted to fit your corners.
Cheers,
J

Yeah, there are many interesting species and ever so many web types ( I love the little guy that hangs one thread with a sticky ball down and angles for prey), and I think it's doable to do custom webs like you say. Just place the subdivided balls where you want them in the multipoly object and get to work.
