I played around with negative displacement values and came up with this. I added a tree population and rendered six images which I then stitched together. I am not very happy with the regular strata look in the background but I didn't want to render this again. Rendertimes were high because I had ray trace on in the athmosphere tab to make the shading of the trees look more real. Without it the trees in the shadow looked flat and almost selfilluminating.

Great sense of scale and depth. I also like how the rays creates a shadow and light diagonal through the render.

very nicely done...I like the surfacing in some parts....
and a suggestion...maybe you could add something in the shadows maybe like a cave entrance or something to add more mystery to the image!

Oh yes very nice
"Jump" Hmmmm NO
I had a similar problem with distant strata in one of my scenes, I had an idea, not tested yet, that I could use a distance shaher to confine the strata to the near part of the image and get rid of those regular lines in the distance.
As I say not tested yet

Very good. I also like the rays. It adds a lot.
The textures are very good. Is it all procedural?

Thanks for your comments and your suggestions. If rendertimes were faster I'd render it again. Textures are procedural.
The population has only one tree. The brightness variations of the trees came by accident and I don't know why, but I like it.

This looks really nice, especially the rock in the shadows. Perfect GI right there. I'm not sure I like the strata too much though, as its too "perfect", but I know how hard it is to change this effect.
I really like this!
