This is the first time I've really spent time with terrain, I'm not particualarly good with it, probably due to lack of practice, but I normally stick to atmospheric stuff. Anyhow, this is my first project aimed soley at terrain, it's basically an asteroid that's crashed into a wide chasm and been left to the elements for hundreds of years. I used that trick of moving a secondary planet close to the main planet, in this case straight into it. I don't really like the water edge by the bottom of the render but I'll fix that in the next render. Also I'll make the textures a bit more interesting, it's just a basic sandy one on the main terrain at the minute and a couple of simple surface layers on the asteroid.
One thing I would like to draw attention to is the erosion to the far left of the render, where the asteroid had dug in under the terrain on impact and wind erosion has worn that terrain down. Took me 3 days to get the right, hope you like it.
Any suggestions would be cool, oh and I think I'll tweak the lighting to make the near side of the asteroid a bit more interesting to look at. There'll also be some hidden surprises for the sharp eyed in the final render.

My observations -

Nice crash.

The regular terrain needs a little more spice.

I would like more clarity in the atmosphere to see better, but maybe at this height this amount of haze is more realistic.
So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

couldn't really think of anything to do with the terrain, I was going to add a few trees but I couldn't think of any that'd really work in a canyon type setting. None that I have anyhow.
What do you think would punch it up?

I quoted myself and then...misery upon misery.  Anyway, ignore this one.   ::)

Just a couple of ideas:
I see you're using some PFS blending, right?  If not, some more wouldn't hurt.  And maybe some color differences via fake stones.  Be careful of displacements, though.

Nice idea.  I have to agree that a little less haze would let us see what is going on.  Once it is available some transparency would help the water.  I like the idea pf some vegetation as this would help to define the scale.
Smoke me a kipper I'll be back for breakfast.

Classical twist and shear shader ! It's certainly the first image that we have all done, but it is a start!

I remember two images made in January 2007, with the famous twist and shear shader

This one :

Sorry dude, no twist and shear here.  :D It's just a weird thing that happens to the secondary planet when you delete it's atmo and move it within the main planets atmosphere

Ok, I would have done better to shut me!

I've done some more work on the terrain but that sharp water line's still there, any ideas on how I can soften it?

Fantastic images there Phyllo! Would you be willing to share the clouds in the last image?
