A secret place

Hi all,

it's too hilarious to be true, but I begin to believe our minds are all connected. While everyone was posting their latest canyon-like images, I too was working on one. The one below is called "a secret place" (tremendously unique, I know :) ), took just 4 hours to render with the new multi-threaded alpha, GI 2/2, transparent water (although not noticable) and soft shadows.

The canyon structures are based on Nikita's ingenious and lightning fast method of creating a procedural, decent looking canyon. You should really look it up there if you haven't done already. Nikita maintains an english version of the site: http://en.tgblog.de/

Nikita, if you read this: there's a slight mistake in the canyon tgd, and it's related to lateral displacement (hint). Do you want to try and find it yourself or do you prefer me to point you to it ;-)

Best regards,
Frank

Simply beautiful :)
Looks like we wont have to wait too long now (hint ? ;) )

Thanks, Frank.  Wonderful.
So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

marvelous colours. good lighting too

Frank, 4 hours seems a little steep, but I'm wondering what your Detail setting was as well as your Anti-aliasing?  Did you use GI Surface Details (was it checked?)?

I believed the GI 2/2 was for the Relative Detail and Sample Quality, right?  That leaves a few others - Detail, Anti-aliasing and GI Surface Details (checked or unchecked).  At least, I have always believed the GI #/# meant Relative Detail and Sample Quality.  Anyway, I'm interested in all of the settings, since all influence render time greatly.

GI 2/2 it seems ^^

detail was 0.8
aa at 3
atmo samples at 32
gi 2/2, no surface details
rendered using 2 cores

But the biggest chunk of credits to speed go to the fractal origin and node setup of the terrain.

Thanks to everyone for the compliments! :-)

Thanks, Frank.  If I understand you correctly, the speed (or slowdown, as it were) was largely influenced by the fractals and node setup.  I realize .8 is sort of on the upper end as well and GI 2/2 is on the verge of pushing the quality up pretty high in a place where there are rays shining through into a dark place like this.  So...I wish we could test the same scene with the old to see the speed difference, but there might not be a way to do that.

Anyway, thanks for showing us what the new can do.

Not quite certain if I understand you correctly: do you reckon the 4 hours fast or not (speaking of slowdowns)?
It's probably interesting to know that the whole upper part excluding the water was done in about 2.5 hr including the GI pre-pass. The remaining 1.5 hr went for the water.

Beautiful image, great light and atmo.

inkydigit

a special space Frank, thanks for sharing!

Frank, if the node network, et. al. went as heavy as I can imagine, then 4 hours was purrrrfect.
