Hello, I'm a newbie in Terragen.
And I mean really a newbie (just a few weeks).
I downloaded Terragen 0,9 and used it as it was. I did not come with many
features (I mean atm, srf and other files).

I just want to know where I can download such files. (Of course I will try to make some of my own.)

I'm also wondering why it is so difficult to make realistic mountains in Terragen ? To brush them yourself is almost impossible to do. I've read on this forum that you have to do this in other programs.

Is it possible to download terrain generating methods anywhere ? Now I only have Ridged (Multi)Perlin, SubDivide and Displace, Perlin Noise and Multi Perlin.

Thanks for the help.

Karina (from Belgium).

Hi

At this moment I really want to ask exactly the same question. Because I only find *.tgd files and no *.tgw.
Thanks for every helping hand ...

Terragen 2 is the current version of Terragen that is in active development. It is significantly more capable than TG 0.9 so most people have moved on to working with it instead, and most files now available are for this newer version. There are still some files for the older TG 0.9 at http://www.ashundar.com/ and http://www.terranuts.com/ among other places.

As far as terrain generation, the tools provided in TG 0.9 are very basic and are not intended to represent a full terrain generation and editing system. We recommend you use a 3rd party application such as Geocontrol, World Machine, Wilbur, Leveller, etc.

Thanks for the swift reply.

I have read that TG 2 has bugs. Isn't this a problem (for newbies) ??
The other programs you recommend ... I will look into them.

Keep up the good work folks !!

Karina.

I think the main problems with TG2 are that it is very slow and much more difficult to use than TG0.9.

I don't recommend looking for ready made world or atmosphere files etc.
What fun would there be to get a world made by someone else and then just render it?
The files are nothing but saved settings, you can create those yourself. You can use those files that come with TG as starting point.

One tip I would like to give for creating textures. Always use water level 0, so that you can use the same texture files with your other terrains and still use things like "wet sand" layer. You can adjust the altitude range of terrain to set the required water level related to terrain.

For creating mountains, I guess you mean the manual terrain editing tools. They are indeed very basic and have only a limited use. The normal way to create terrain is to let Terragen create it. It can create very realistic results. Just adjust the parameters and camera angle until you get the result you want. You can further change the terrain using the tools in Modify window (canyonize, glaciate etc.).

An external program such as World Machine gives more options, such as erosion and terrace effects. If you want to edit the terrain manually, you can do it with a paint program (that supports 16-bit color depth). To do this, you can convert the terrain file into TIF file using my TerraConv program. You can find some examples / tutorials of what you can do with this method from my Terragen page below.

Thanks again for the reply by Pauli.

The reason why I asked if there aren't more terrain generating methods in Terragen is because the four or five methods I now have at my disposal don't give me the results I want. To me they are not realistic enough.

It is also impossible for me to create shores/beaches. Or I don't know how. How to create foam ? When I use this tool, nothing changes to my satisfaction. As a matter of fact, there is never foam to be seen.

I don't understand the use of the layers either.

I always only get mountains (with or without grass or snow), sea (without shores and foam), skies with or without clouds. It's becoming rather boring.

What am I doing wrong ?????

There must be websites on which one can find various lessons/tutorials for the good use/comprehension of the program ? In addition to the one of Pauli which is a very good start (for sunbeams).

Have a nice day further ! Thank you.

This website has a lot of links dealing with that version of terragen.
... and BTW, the latest versions of T2 are not buggy.  Prior releases,
maybe.  Most here report it is now solid.   -  Bill Reid .

Terragen 2 is in continuous development and is currently available in pre-release. Notable bugs are expected during this time. All software is ultimately released with bugs as well, but these are generally much more infrequent and minor. We are now working toward a final release of Terragen 2 and it is significantly more stable and functional than earlier versions. I think you will find TG2 to be a stable and capable application in its final release.

In regards to terrain generation, I strongly recommend looking into 3rd party editing tools like World Machine, Geocontrol, Wilbur, L3DT, or Leveller, amongst others, all of which include much more sophisticated terrain generation and editing tools. Many of these are also available in a free version (limited in some cases) and can be purchased in unrestricted form for a reasonable price.

antares,

Have you not read the official guide?  You find it here:
http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/guide/
It explains each of main dialog boxes.  Once you've got the basics then try this tutorial:
http://www.caroluk.org.uk/terratut/

There after I'd browse Ashundar at:

Hallo Karina,

I am a TG 0.9 beginner, too. It's nice to hear there are more of us because so many have changed to TG2, which I, of course, also intend to do one day. But at the moment 0.9 keeps me busy enough.

Have a look at the following links (good terrains-downloads):

http://www.tecmu.de/php/modules.php?name=Downloads&cid=13

http://www.terrafiction.de/terrains/categories.php?cat_id=2

http://matthias-blum.de/Terragen/download.html

http://www.joshushund.com/downloads.html

I would recommend you register this version. It is not very expensive. But you have the advantage to be able to use terrains bigger than 513x513.

Have fun :)

Can their results be imported in *.ter format?

Oshyan

Yes, all of those programs support direct export to .ter
