I have noticed that beyond a few unique examples Terragen 2 is only used for landscapes, that is what it is designed for and it does an amazing job! However I wanted to try something new, a still life of an ordinary desk...with some unordinary objects. All of the textures are image maps (I wish I could get better versions for Uranus, Neptune, and Mercury) that can be found online except for the drawings which are my friends.

Please look and enjoy, and if you wish comment, critique, and suggest to your heart's desire.

Extremely cool. Reminds me of something I did in POVRay a few years back, only I had Saturn (including rings) and Earth. Do tell - where did you get the image map of the desk? I'm guessing the Earth is using the Blue Marble maps? And how did you get such a nice shiny finish on everything?

darthvader

The image of the desk is just a picture I took of the dresser next to my desk in my dorm room, it turned out a lot better than I had hoped. You would be right to guess that the earth image is from blur marble and I wish I could have put in saturn's rings somehow but nothing I tried looked decent. The nice shiny finish is from reflective shaders set to a reflectivity of 1.5

I'm not sure how you did this, but it's very cool.  Maybe give us some general idea of your work flow - this would be nice.
So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

This is a really nice image!  Thanks for sharing.

Very cool, and different.

Very nice image. I agree that TG should be used for more than just landscapes and this is an excellent example of what can be done. Personally I like trying surreal images which can often be quite good (IMHO). Did one today actually of a figure "trapped" in a giant green crystal, but I don't often post these.
I say let's see more of this type.

Very cool image but I think you could go further, should you wish :)
Try adding a small displacement to the desk texture and give drawings a little thickness and a slight displacement texture to pick up the specularity. Thiss will add to the render time but take it a step nearer photo real.

This is marvellous! Or should I say marblelous? ;D

Thank you everybody! I actually was going to take the next step with adding texture to the desk and drawings, so I will work on that and bring an update later one..probably tomorrow.

@ Calico: the workflow is very simple, just spheres for the planets with spherical projection image maps and reflective shaders. For the drawings / desk the image map is plane y projected down onto the planes and I gave the images the same dimensions as the planes themselves...hopefully that makes sence.

@ MacGyver: Hahahahaha  ;D

Unfortunately, the model I had of Saturn can't be exported from POV-Ray, but I see that TurboSquid has some models with rings.

Have you tried http://laps.fsl.noaa.gov/albers/sos/sos.html
lots of nice images and links.

refreshingly different...excellent work...@ Kevin F...cheers for the link!

Very nice, it's similar to some of the things I like to do with Terragen. Don't let it be said that TG is just a landscape renderer, there are some excellent proofs of this everywhere. Keep it up, man. :)

Great render, very interesting use of TG.
