Can't get it to render any larger then this it keeps crashing.  The bison is from Daz3d other stuff from around the net or modeled in lightwave and zbrush

nice - the bark in particular  :)

darthvader

Nice, I agree about the bark.

Oshyan

Very nice, especially the tree as others have mentioned.

Regarding the crash, what are your system specs, and what render settings were you using when it crashed?

Thanks

I run Vista 64 ultimate with 8 gigs of ram on a quad core amd 9850.  It crashes near the end of the render but only when I try to render it 1600 by 1050 or larger.

If anyone has any tips on how to get a zbrush model in with uv maps in place I would love to hear them.

I too think the bark is exceptional - where did you get the model? The image in general is also great. I know it's not ideal, but if you're having crashes with bigger render sizes, you could always try cropping, using the new "ray detail region" in the Advanced tab of the Renderer. Its use is explained well in this thread: http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=6234.0

Great tree indeed, but I also love all the little flowers and the grass. Very nice!
Howgh!

Tangled-Universe

Very nice image! As being said already the tree-bark is beautiful. Would love to know too where you got that model from.
Perhaps the mountains in the background could use some extra work. The rest is just fine and I think the buffaloos are a nice idea and well executed.

Looking at your specs and this scene I'm a bit surprised it crashes. It doesn't look that extremely heavy, unless you used extreme render-settings. Can you post your rendersettings, also for atmo and clouds and stuff?

If it isn't in your rendersettings the ray detail region padding feature might be an option, but be careful with it. You'll have to choose your crops of the image carefully because even big differences in lighting between the crops still can cause troubles with seams.

Thanks everyone,

   The tree is from: https://www.trinity3d.com/product.php?productid=1598&cat=402&page=12

It is the free sample half way down the page. I made the roots in zbrush and lightwave.

I think my render settings may have been a little high causing the crash.   The tree model and bison were a heavy poly models so I am sure they did not help much.

I had one more crash when I would reopen to update a painted shader and start painting if I hit the edge of the preview window when painting it would crash.  If very careful and stayed away from the edge of the window every thing was ok.

atmo:44 samples
clouds:277 samples
render settings:
detail: 1
AA:6
GI:4
GI sample:1
GI Blur:2
Mitchell-Netravali filter
there are 5 populations used

Tangled-Universe do you have a reference image showing what the background mountains should look like?

Tangled-Universe

Hmmm...except for the GI all the settings don't seem out of the ordinary. It's "better" to chose sample quality over GI detail, so in your case the scene would look even good, if not better, with GI @ 1/3. It would also render faster and use less memory.
Did you use any raytraced shadows in atmosphere or clouds?

Regarding the background-mountains. I don't use any photos for reference myself, but what I'd like to see is a bit more variation on colors. Normally I'd suggest to add some trees, but since your scene already crashes (perhaps not after changing your GI strategy) that doesn't seem like a good idea.
It would be nice to see some darker soil on the less steep slopes using intersect underlying in favor depression mode.
You could do it the other way around for the snow. Using favor rises for the snow will make it appear on the ridges as well, think that would look very good. Further you could add some stretched grass patches on the darker soil, by just using color (no models).
Just some suggestions to make it look as interesting as your foreground which is really good.

Oshyan

Ah yes, those lovely Archmodels!

Did you happen to change the Render Buffer size at all?

- Oshyan

DaveC

Yes they make some great models.

I did not change any other render settings.  I am still working on this and have made some changes and will try a big render again while I go to work.

This reminds me of an old post card.  Pretty cool saturated colors.

DaveC

Worked on the scene a bit and tried a lot of the suggestions.
