OnyxTree and distribution

Hi,

As copyright in regards to learning came up in Calico's eminent post, allow me not to hijack it, but to ask a somewhat related question in a separate post: How come you guys are using/distributing OnyxTree wires?
Onyx are explicit in their licensing - see screenshot:

I'd love to know how you guys got permission - I want it too :-)

Unless you point to a specific example I dont think anyone can answer you, and to be fair if you know of a specific example you might just want to ask them directly "off forum".
As far as I know no one is distributing Onyx "wires" but you may have some other info ...

I was looking in the file sharing forum, and saw a lot of OnyxTree meshes offered up.
I was just windering how you got permission, 'cause I  wouldn't mind sharing, myself.

I know Planetside has mentioned explicitly that Onyx trees were not to be distributed here, so I agree with cyphyr - examples, please.

One example - links to homepage, stating explicity Onyx is getting used.

Onyx are notorious for not answering their mail when you ask them politely for permission - I can't even get an answer from them after years as a customer, and good reviews of their stuff in trade magazines - so if anyone knows how to approach them, I am very much all ears :-)

As for asking in the forum - it's a straight up question? I wasn't aware I couldn't ask this in a forumpost :-) ?

I clicked on the HomePage link. Mr Miley has made some beautiful European trees. The page states that they were created using XFrog. I even downloaded a couple of them.

I'll leave it be - it was just a question. The Ulmus Americana is definitely an Onyx wire. The linden tree is the exact same tree I used in my initial post on translucency

just leave it be - I can see how the question could be misconstrued.
I was curious, is all - my thoughts were basically "oh, cool, someone finally got permission" - "how do I get permission" and "must be because of the xfrog competition" - in roughly that order.

Quite right. Forgot I posted these, looong time ago, before I bothered to read Onyx message on exporting a tree, about distributing. Removed them now. I'm going away to strap myself to a tree and whip myself with stinging nettles. Nothing to do with the models, its just what I like to do around this time of day

If anyone has questions about someone, talking to them in private first would be more pleasant.  If they don't listen, then maybe get someone else involved.  Luckily, we were dealing with Mr. Miley.

Mr Miley - I have no beef with you on it, again, it was a straight up question, as I assumed noone would post those wires w/o permission. I was asked to provide an example - I wasn't aware you seemingly were the only one, and hence put you on the spot.

Calico - people deal with different issues, different ways. I can understand you wanting to keep the tone of the fora pleasant, as do I,  but I do have the right to ask polite questions as long as I am within the ToS and am not wilfully stirring up stuff, without having someone dictate how to conduct myself, or how to ask questions.

I don't think they (Onyx) would be too displeased. Terragen 2 is the best software of this type out there. I'd think they would offer some plug-ins eventually. I have been thinking about writing something, but my programming skills are 'stone knives and bearskins' now.

I asked them, thrice, if  could put their wires on a magazine CD - once, they answered no, the other two times they ignored me.
They state on their site they're not interested, even. When I first bought the Garden Suite, I had to ask, specifically on how I was to use the wires - and anything bar in moving or still imagery is verboten, but you may (sic) distrubute alpha-planes with renders....

Me, I'd almost kill to be able to use the wires other places than in stills and matte/animation - I find their way of generating trees often give superior results, both as standalone and in TreeStorm. I *loved* the grass-generator they just came out with,too, even though I most of the time prefer Xfrog for grass.

Maybe we should just start a petition :-)
A forum post asking people to just add their nick to the request to be allowed to distrubute wires, or to be allowed TGO only distribution?

I must admit, I don't think Onyx do themselves any favours with regards distributing. I actually prefer Onyx to Xfrog, but their policy is rather draconian to say the least... ho hum
