I wanted to thank everyone for the kind words .

Doing this was quite a challenge and I'm pleased with how it came out . Producing nebulae in this way and this look is unlike anything I've found before and that was the point, they had to be different but also complement the environments that already existed in the game so as not to seem completely off kilter .

I agree with the comments on the planet, it could have used a lot more work but unfortunately in this case it was a victim of a tight deadline . I am happy with the final look of it despite not quite on par with some of the other excellent users of Terragen, nvseal for example and there's always room for improvement but I wanted to fit the style as much as I could .

Some higher resolution images, minus the ships !

The negative comments made from the CG community regarding Terragen is very disappointing considering the sheer power, versatility and uniqueness of the software and what it is capable . Indeed with the development of the EVE nebulae I spent weeks looking for alternative solutions including the 'bigger' tools such as 3dsmax or Maya but after much R&D, Terragen was the only tool that gave me the quality and diversity I needed without massive storage overheads, even better than Vue .

The perception of Terragen is quite strange and in my experience it is no less a production viable tool than most any other these days . Perhaps it is niche, and less suitable for certain tasks, but that is the point here . Suitability . Using the best suited tool relative to the project or task .  And hey Terragen has some big budget use under its belt too, including its birthplace (Stealth) . Could Bryce ever claim that ?

Where have you read about these comments? Do you mean CGSociety, or another place?

Thanks;

For many people Terragen has - similar like Vue and Poser - the "smell" of users that just put together some objects and press render. And even if people then see a great Terragen render, then they will comment something like "nice, but TG is made for that, so thats nothing special"

It took quite some time in the early 1990's for Lightwave to be recognized as a useful program. Babylon 5 changed that perception, eventually. When people in the big production houses learn how to use this program, you can bet it will take off! First, Terragen 2 has to get over the conservatism of the production houses.

I agree...however there are many things that Terragen doesn't yet do that studios rely on to get work approved/on time/on budget.
getting closer though.

I started with Lightwave 1.0. It was pretty rudimentary.

I agree with this. The fact that there has always been a free TG2 (or Terragen) means that galleries in certain places are full of images just knocked out quickly. Providing a free TG2 might be good in some ways but in other ways it damages the perception of TG2 due to the glut of poor images.

TG2 is not "hyped" software. It will have to succeed from what the app can do and how well people use these features. Nothing else.

The pictures are cool. I love the Nebulae effects.

Hey Guys,

I'm noticing a lot of people hitting my site from links I've posted here but getting 404s .

The images have been repurposed in a lot of cases but if you're still interested you can see the work here:

Thankyou for the interest !
