Sometimes, you get the perfect scene by pure accident.

I don't know why, but this is one of the most beautiful pictures I've ever done with TG2. It's not the technical best, or the most vivid, but somehow it touches me. And it was never intended to be, it's a purely random "hm, this looks right, let's render it" shot.

Yes, I think it's the painted look that I like. It has neither a typical CG nor a photorealism appearance.

It's definitely a simple scene. I tried spicing it up with some vegetation, but I don't think that improved it. Higher detail settings _did_ help remove the grain from the clouds, however. So I'll probably render it again with those settings.

It does have a water colour feel to it.

Have a play with the Rock object as a population object to simulate bushes and forrests. Just add some displacement in it's internal network to get some 'bushy' effects. It will help break up the flattness without you having to muck around with plant models, and at the distance you have the camera, works just as well, if not better.

Seth, you are too much of a perfectionist.   You make a great image, and then you start finding more things to add, or tweak. I think the only time you really finish an image is when you start a new project!

That depends on your definition of "perfection", I figure.

Mine is that a scene is perfect if I can not imagine anything that would improve it. That doesn't necessarily mean that is is the "best ever" TG2 render. Just that for this particular scene, nothing I try or think of makes it better than it is.

And that's true of this scene. I can think of nothing where I'd say "yes, that would make it even better".

It's not the technical best, or the most vivid,

But I doubt you would be able to improve on it no matter how many hours you spent tinkering with the settings.  You could probably improve an many aspects clouds, surfacing etc. but if you did you would loose the spontaneity and ruin that painted feel.  You could spend forever trying for the perfect version, which would end up looking stiff and dead or you can move on and do something fresh and new. 

I sometimes find that I get bogged down in the details and get the impression that I am noyt the only one.

I agree with Mr. Lamppost. Many of my renders do not come out very well. About 1 in 5 really stands out. If I can't get the look in about 5 hours, I start over.
