Not bad dark boy... Feels like a scene from American Werewolf in London. Don't stray from the path (Ooops... too late).
I just need to tweak that texture a bit more...

Walli

I would increase light intensity to show a little bit more from the scene

rcallicotte

I agree with Walli.  Maybe save it in EXR and do some light magic later.  Needs more light intensity at the site of the lamp, since lights like this tend to lose impact quickly after the point of origin.
So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

I saved a exr version but I don't currently have photoshop at home- just gimp, but I have access to photoshop at my work.
(I posted it minutes after the render finished.)

Mr_Lamppost

Lonely indeed.  ;D

As I hope you can see from this photo of the real thing albeit fitted with a much brighter mercury lamp probably from the 1950s.  Like the original gas mantles modelled the lamp in this photo is mounted almost directly above the top of the cast iron lamp standard.  Because of this almost no light reaches the sides of the lamppost, the only way you are going to realistically show the shape of the lamppost is to add an extra light source off to one side.

The lamppost pictured is column No. 9 on the north side or Alma Villas, Hastings.  The photo was taken at dusk on the 18th july 2007 this lamppost and lamp was observed to still be in service with no sign of planned replacement on 16th July 2009.  The lamppost pictured, which is one of many similar designs is marked for the Hastings and St Leonards Gas Co which would operated from 1832 so may originally have been fitted with a simple gas jet burner as inverted incandescent mantles, as featured in my model,  first appeared in the UK in 1895.  The lamp seen is a Later BLEECO (Brighton Lighting and Electrical Engineering Co), Hastings lantern fitted with a mercury lamp, a similar lantern although mounted on a smaller bracket it documented here:

And NO.  Mr lamppost is not Simon Cornwell.  ;) ;D

thank you Mr_lamppost, for your advice

also, there aren't any lampposts out in the woods where i live, and there are aren't many street lights either.

We have loads of them around here but they are all modern uninteresting tubular steel polls.

I do really like your image, very moody and mysterious.

This image from ages ago shows a problem similar problem with lighting the sides of my signature toy lamppost, this one if from nearly two years ago.

then there's this one posted over at terragen.org that uses the same model you are using.  It shows absolutely no detail on the lamppost even though there is some overall lighting in the scene.

As this was a contest winner the .tgd is available in the downloads section.

I really really like the original image, it's dark yes, but it practically oozes atmosphere and mood.  One of my favourite recent renders!
