The joke works because algebra is a corruption of an arab word (al-ğabr) coming from the title of a book by the persian (yes, one of those evil iranians...) mathematician Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi (al-Khwarizmi... algorithm...).

While the west was collapsing in the darkness of the middle age, islamic culture was preserving Greek culture and creating enormous works in the fields of mathematics, astronomy and medicine (just to mention a few).

Something to think about, don't you agree?
