Great, 'kin great! :(
Managed to back up everything (well I'm a boy with a new toy lol)
Installed it, easy as pie only to find that its apparently an illeagal copy.
"This copy of Windows 7 is not genuine"
It came in a sealed box, its covered in holograms, its got a MS seal/sticker on the front (which I had to break to open the box and its got a MS 20 character Alpha/Neumeric "Product Key". It was bought from Amazon by my girlfriends son as a birthday present.
Bloody anoyed

Figured out how to do clicky signatures

I wasn't going to bother for a while. Is that why its saying its not genuine? Extremely anoying if so.

Could be. It's only the license that comes up with that message. The only other thing I would suggest is to reinstall it but don't put the product key in during the installation. Put it in from Windows once it's installed.

You prob need to update the product key.  After installing it auto puts a key there, and says "activate now" or whatever, but isn't the key you actually use.

Go to Computer (or "my computer", whatever) and at the top it should say "organize, views, system properties.." etc.  Click system properties, and at the bottom hit "change product key" and put the one you got in your box.

I know with mine when i installed the key there was not my actual key, i had to retype mine and then activate.

cyphyr

Well I tried again today and now it wont gat past the product key, each time I enter it it says invalid key. Of course Microsoft's help line is only open 8am till 6pm weekdays so that is not much help. So far I have managed two installs on differant disks, one time is=nstalls fine but says it is an illegal copy and the next time it tells me the product key is invalid, its the same key I used yesterday!
So now I have no pc, no way of getting in touch with MS or Amazon till monday so I am not very happy with my birfday prezzy :(

Maybe someone has invented a keygen for win7 already, letting people steal some keys.

Also sometimes you hear about accidental duplicate keys.

It happens.  Bummer it happened to you.

In a forum was this:

" I had this problem last night with the Windows 7 Home Upgrade. Turns out, if you don't ALREADY have XP or Vista installed, it will claim your CD-Key is invalid.
...
All you have to do is install XP or Vista first, then insert the Windows 7 CD from within Windows. You can ask it to "Upgrade" from Vista "in-place" or do a clean install. However, their idea of "Clean Install" means it takes your entire existing Windows install and puts it into a folder called Windows.OLD and saves it on your new install."

If the above is your problem please look here : http://community.winsupersite.com/blogs/paul/archive/2009/10/23/clean-install-windows-7-with-upgrade-media-the-answer.aspx

I don't think that is your problem....?

Kadri.

If they still have this loophole, you can use the upgrade media to install a 30 day trial version, and then "upgrade" the trial edition.  I had to do this as I only had 32bit media for my full vista, while i had a 64bit upgrade disk and was wanting 64bit (and had enterprise key and a ultimate upgrade key).

You did it by just not entering a key on install and allowed it to install the trial, then you ran install again using upgrade key.

Henry Blewer

When I upgraded to Vista, I had to wait 24 days for the OS to be validated by Microsoft. I was freaked. Amazon.com got on Microsoft for me. I bought the upgrade there.

Forget Tuesday; It's just Monday spelled with a T

This sounds about right >:(
One of the side issues is that you can not upgrade Vista 64 Ultimate to Win7 Home Premium, apparently V64U is "higher in the food chain" than W7HP. The version I have is a full version, supposedly, so no trial installs available.
Blo*dy MS, I'm stumpped till monday and even then I'm none too confident. gnrrrr :(

thats odd... i've prob used my key a billion times across xp, vista, and 7 with the amount i change os :P

try right clicking and running as administrator.  maybe its not getting access to the keyfile as its in program files.  i notice some people have issues where stuff gets restricted access... i never seem to have those problems...

matrix2003

that IS very odd!  I too have moved it from machine to machine, OS etc ... with out a blip?   :-\
