Nicely conceived and executed  - I would perhaps go with slightly brighter lighting (assuming we're talking a middle of the day scene here)

You're right, the light should be improved.
The sun is very low here, because I wanted to work out the sand ripples.
Any suggestions for better lighting?

The sun angle is probably fine. I would add some ambient occlusion, about 1.4 on the surfaces. Increase the GI to about 1.4 on the surfaces. The last thing would be to increase the exposure on the camera. The camera exposure setting would have to be tested to get the right light effect.

Looking good!

Now how about some stones, or even dry soil around the oasis edge?  You might also want to try some soft shadows as well to see what they look like :)
