Shoreline
February 06, 2010, 09:02:10 AM
First "true" practise image in Terragen.. tried to take care of all the little details.. Not happy with the sky though. Any ideas
how to make it look better?
Rendered in 27 hours at 1000x700
Detail 0.9
AA 8
Had GI surface details on.. This propably caused the huge render time...

A nice fresh image. In my opinion the distributions of the pebbles and the bushes are too uniform.
You postworked it, right? There's a little bit too much contrast and it's a bit too sharp for my taste. Besides the sky reflects kind of violet in the water which looks a bit strange.
I like it anyway.

Thanks! Yea I did slight post processing.. Original was a tad too "flat" so tried to change that some...
Maybe I'll do another render with different sun angle and see what happens.

Nice start. Try and stay away from the sharpen filter or be very conservative with it. I use it sometimes because, as you mentioned, the images tend to be flat. Hannes is right about the distribution however, this is easily fixed.
Looking forward to an update.

missing something obious here.. I was using fake stone shader..

Add a Surface Layer. Then reconnect the fake stones so they are children of the new surface layer. Turn off the surface layers color (un check the checkbox). Now you can reduce the population by adjusting the coverage slider. The Fractal Breakup can be used to control the size of the area the fake stones cover.

Thanks! But how do I change the sizes so that they are more random..? Or do I just need to use several layers..

Exactly, start with three fake stone shaders + their power fractals or so, and connect them through two merge shaders (firstly 2, then add the third), set to 'highest raise', then feed the final into the child of the surface layer.

Here's new version.. was rendered at 2000x1500 and ~100 hours.. Definately need to upgrade my
render machine... Better clouds now but still the pebbles are the same.
Thanks for the advice guys! Will try it when I get my rig ready..

I generally stick with my monitors max image size, because of the long render times.
The clouds are better. I like this image.
