Thanks Kadi,

I was introduced to 3D Studio r1 in 1992 and have used it ever since. Now I tend to use other programs as well depending on the work I'm doing. MODO, XSI, Maya and ZBrush. The art of 3D has come a very long way in 18 years.

Thanks for the link.

that was informative, its neat to see how different programs progress over the years.

i only started using & learning 3DS max about year ago, but mainly just at my job, any modeling that i do in my free time i use Lightwave 3d

@zaai999 - How do you like LW?  Have you tried Modo and, if so, did you like it?  Do you use LW for animation?  If so, how is it to learn compared to any other sort of animation system?
So this is Disney World.  Can we live here?

I have not used Modo, yet.

I first started learning 3d in my senior year of high school (2001-2002, and on my own, it was'nt a course), i had a choice between lightWave 3D & 3d Studio Max, & i chose LightWave 3D,
I like Lightwave, it's the 3d app I'm most familiar / comfortable with, i find the UI straightforward and its not a very difficult program to learn.

I mainly use lightwave for modeling, its been awhile since i've done any animations with it. i found LW3D's animating system normally easy, the only problems i have had would be rigging characters & IK stuff.

The makers of Modo are the original Lightwave programmers. Long story  :)

I didn't use Modo too.

For the one who are in icons in menu bars and so Lightwave can be irritating at first. There are no icons in the user interface.

For rendering animating and so you use the Layout program. For modeling  you use the Modeler program . Some love this some hate it  :)

If you search , you will in a way find some agreement that the Rendering is very good , modeling easy , but that it lacks in the character animation front .
But you can make anything you want with it if you are good enough . But then this is in all software the same !

When you buy Lightwave you can set up a render farm up to 999 cores for free.

But all of this may change this year if Lightwave Core comes out . This will be the new version of Lightwave. But this is another long story.
You can go directly to the Newtek forums . There are good topics with flaming posts(!) .
If you read some of them you would thing that Lightwave is doomed in the near future. I hope it is not.
I like Lightwave . And i will use it in the future too. in one form or another because it is the software i know since so many years ( 15 ?) .

After the new version of Blender i will learn it too . 1 software is sometimes not enough .

Download  the demos  of the programs you want to know and try them yourself , Calico . Do not trust us . This software likability is sometimes  very subjective  ;)

Cheers.

Kadri.

I've used Lightwave before, but didn't like the interface.  Gave it up, after about six months.  Modo's interface is so much friendlier, I believe.  But, Modo's strength is its modeler and renderer.  Some other good things have been added as well, but there have been some instability issues.

Anyway, Blender is looking GOODER and GOODER.   ;D
