Hollywood says this all the time , but when Stephen Hawking says it , it sounds so different ;)

I did not read this yet. But when advanced cultures have interacted with smaller, more 'primitive' cultures, the smaller culture usually suffers. The contact would probably throw our world into chaos.

That's without question, regardless of the attitude of the foreign intelligence. The whole religious system would collaps.
If we should be afraid of aliens, I don't know. I don't think that humans can even remotely estimate what a race would be like that is advanced enough to master FTL space travel. We would have to guess how our society develops within the next hundreds or thousands of years to be able to make an educated guess of what an alien culture might be like and that's next to impossible.
But all that doesn't really matter because the Reapers will get us anyw-- ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL.
