Surface Shader

Is there any in depth information on Surface Shaders.

I created this quick terrain and added two surface layers below the base colours. In the second or last surface layer I change the colors to what I want but it appears white in the preview. I am limiting the slop angle.

I hope this is clear.

I will answer any questions that arise.

Here is the file if you want to look at it.

There is a .ter file associated with the heightfield but it's 2mb.

If you need it let me know and I'll provide it.

It looks like you have set this surface layer to be applied to all surfaces (flat) up to 30 degrees.  The color you have set is gray which seems to be correct in your image.

A thing that helped me understand if I had conflicting surface layers - two surface layers where one overwrites the first; is to use the Test color checkbox and also the Enable checkbox.

Check one surface layer at a time to determine if that is what you want.  To do this, disable (uncheck) the "Enable" checkboxes on all but one of your surface layers.  With one surface layer enabled, use the test color to tweak how it lays on your terrain.  Do this for each successive layer, until you get the desired result.

Hope this helps...

Is it me or isn't there any problem here?
I see base colours with 1 surface layer on top of it.
The second/last surface layer is a 50% gray colour, but due to lighting it appears lighter than the set colour.
You can see in the render you showed that the slope restriction is working fine.
If you'd ask me this is all just fine. Lighting has a dramatic effect on the appearance of colours in the render.
It can make it duller/more vivid or darker/lighter. So basically you should never try to compare colour input with colour output of the render.

Martin is right. The lighting has made the color of the surface layer 'lighter'. I have had dark gray turn nearly white in direct sun. If it is too much, I add a lambert shader.

I figured it out and the mistakes I was making.

Thanks again.
